1870s Bustle Dress by issuesmissflight 1870s Bustle Dress by issuesmissflight
It's finally finished! This dress was constructed using patterns from "Patterns of Fashion 2." It took over 100 sheets of paper to scale up and print out all the patterns needed, and still required some custom patterns for certain pieces. Underneath is a corset, chemise, bustle, and petticoat. Undergarment yardage is about 6 yards or so, with about 14 yards of fabric or so in the actual dress. The best part? The striped material is from Walmart of all places for just $2/yard. Awesome! Everything was made by me, including the pleated trim (all 27 feet of it) and bias tape trim (all 40 feet of it). Fabric involved include gold silk taffeta, navy broadcloth and unbleached muslin for lining, navy blue satin, and some good 'ol Walmart mystery fabric.

Long live to Walmart $2/yard fabric - I love to go fabric hunting around too and it's always great when you find such good prices ;D

Exquisite work- your use of the stripes is wonderful, especially the chevron pattern you've worked into the bodice! And sometimes when you hit the Walmart mystery bin, you find treasure (my personal favorite is some silver-gray cotton sateen that I found in Walmart's bargain bin.)! The gold and blue are a fantastic combination anyway. A really, really beautiful piece of work!

Thank you so much! Walmart fabric hunting is an art...haha. I've got a green and white cotton from there just waiting to become an early Victorian dress. If I never have to pleat another scrap of fabric it will be too soon! I just posted photos of the gown actually worn for our engagement photos, should you care to see it all finished and accessorized and such :)

Very nice, can someone wear it, or is it only for the bust to wear?

Your edges look very clean and the way you placed the stripes really accentuates the curves. I love the underbust corset style :meow:

Thanks so much! It was tricky to get patterned out correctly, but I think all the time and effort paid off.
